Yes, you need to know the basics – age, gender, location – but you also really need to dig a lot deeper. Why? Because once you target well, great things can happen with your paid social media.

Because of solid targeting and all the elements of a great ad, I was able to create an audience of people who are interested in what I am doing.
This was from a new page on Facebook with a handful of friends and family people liking it.
To get over a thousand people to target to, and then build lookalike audiences from, has cost me less than £6.50 in ad spend.
The ad had only been running a few days at the time I took this image.
It’s going to keep running – that audience will grow and once it’s done its job and become fatigued, I’ll stop it and run another.
Then I can use the cumulative results to really grow my group/page and SELL to them.
How did I do this? I dug deep about who would be interested in what I was doing.
I used my own tools and process to create the audience and then ran my simple, but effective ad to them.
If you niche down you develop a true, comprehensive understanding of your customer.
